    Nice review, Chris. I'm swithering to get this as a light weight get-home shelter. Also for pitstops on day hikes when you want to have lunch but not in the rain. Your comments about condensation are somewhat reassuring. Cheers.

    Hello, I am in the same position as yourself, I can't afford a cordless fancy one, but I can afford to pay £50 odd quid, I too just need it for occasional use, it's now been 4 years since this video, how has it lasted? Is it still strong as an Ox?

      It is still going strong - its had occasional use and has lived most of its life in my tool box. It has not got the highest of torques so it struggles with the really big stuff - but for what I wanted it for (motorcycles and landrover stuff) it has worked well.

      As in the video - it is a complete strip down and a split of the case to access the gearbox - heads, barrels and pistons off, clutch and generator out then the case is split. Do the timing chain when you are that far in too imo. Please don't ask for any details - I did it once from the manual and it was some years ago (look at the date of the video)

    Thanks for the video. I recently had Barnett clutch spring and plates installed on my 02 Nomad 1500. This fixed the slipping clutch problem but man-o-man - the clutch pull with the new Barnett clutch spring is now crazy hard/difficult. Highway and secondary road rides are manageable but for long-term stop and go traffic, holding in and working the clutch is not tolerable. I'm thinking I need to go to the OEM clutch spring if for nothing more - safety. I.e.., the pain and DISTRACTION the Barnett clutch spring causes me in stop and go traffic could be the cause of an accident. Thoughts?

    • @ThePonkster
      @ThePonkster 9 місяців тому

      Hi Peter - Yes I used the standard Thruxton from brake disc and master cylinder - now the pads had bedded in slightly the brake is fantastic with true two finger braking - the feel is amazing and now the brakes are not just on or off like the stock caliper. The new caliper makes trail braking possible which I was unable to do well with the old set up.

      Thanks for your reply-sounds great and will get in touch with HB. I’ve used Pretech before several times on Bonniville and Thruxton models but as you say they are no longer in business as the owners retired-shame!. Pretech used different calipers for the Bonny air cooled range (Bonniville spoked and cast SE, Thruxton & Scrambler) to account for disc size and fork leg mounting positions. Would you be able to just confirm which HB part number your caliper is? Many thanks again and regards, Peter.@@ThePonkster

      Hi Peter - I never really got a part number, I contacted them and told them what bike I had and they sent the correct model - i think they only do it for the thruxton as it has a larger floating disc as stock. They were very helpful

    I finally got my bike back yesterday. $1000 later, still sounds horrible! Drove it 10 minutes and all the transmission fluid leaked out? I get back to the garage, guy says we didn’t even work on that side? It must be something else? They didn’t realize when they put my foot shifter back, it was in a different position? I told the owner, he looked at his mechanic, mechanic looks back and says yes we did take that side apart!!! Caught the owner in a lie! Bike is back there for day 19. The ticking is as bad as ever! It’s embarrassing stopping at a red light. This is my first bike. Only had a license for 6 months. Love riding. This ordeal is killing me. Thanks for the replies.

    • @ThePonkster
      @ThePonkster 9 місяців тому

      You really should get a manual about these bikes as they are very different from Harleys - they don't use transmission fluid and don't have a separate gearbox - the engine oil also lubes the gearbox and clutch. If you don't know the bike any crook can rip you off - work on it yourself and learn how to diagnose problems.

    I watched this video ages ago. Then recently I had someone smash into me and break my shifter peg. Triumph doesn't make oem rear sets for my 06 speed triple any more, and the aftermarket rear set piece that is supposed to connect to the shifter doesn't fit. This video is going to save me money and improve my bike. Much appreciated!

    • @ThePonkster
      @ThePonkster 9 місяців тому

      It seems triumph are quick to stop supporting parts for bikes these days - I think this mod worked well and the oem set up goes sloppy pretty quick after fitting due to its poor design - so cheap and works better. I ended up grinding off the folding peg and drilling and bolting on a fixed peg for extra "feel" - not absolutely needed - just me!

    May I have a question? I just installed the chain tensioner extensions of both of the chains. I also completely removed the vacuum tubes from the idle solenoids and filled the holes. I want to make the same intake upgrade as you did just to remove the tunnel and the left side filter. I'm just thinking about removing the whole system as you are talking about it in 20:50, so my question is, would it be okay when I remove it with the stock exhaust? I want to change the exhaust too on my 1500 nomad, but in the future. I thought that since I got my whole throttle body outside, I could do it now, because disassembling it is kind of pain in the ass so I don't wanna do the whole process again. Thank you for you reply. I really appreciate your videos :) hope you understand what I'm trying to say due to my english :D

    • @ThePonkster
      @ThePonkster 9 місяців тому

      I dont see any problem with doing it with a stock exhaust - all the upgrade does really is give a straighter path to the air and give a cooler air charge. There are lots of theories on how to get out the plastic cross over tube, with some people doing terrible things with power saws! I removed the tube by removing all the securing bolts and then heated it internally on the throttle body side with a hot air gun until it softened - then grabbed it with some mole grips and pulled it out - don't set fire to the bike!!!!!

    my first Moto Guzzi, 1979SP 1000, called for in oil additive to be added to the final drive lube called rocol (row call-?) you could buy it at the Moto Guzzi dealer. it came in a plastic bottle, approximately 100 or so cc. It was absolutely black liquid in that bottle. I believe they instructed the owner to add 1/2 oz to the final drive unit along with the fresh 80/90 WT final drive gear lube.. my following three additional Moto Guzzi’s I had over the decades until 2021, none of them called for that additive to be added to the final drive gear lube.. A bit of irony. I had a mid2000s BMW K 1200 LT. those machines were commonly having final drive failures. My dealer claimed that it was due to people overloading their motorcycles or pulling heavy trailers. That turned out to not be true. that always made me nervous riding that motorcycle with my wife on the back especially. Because I’ve had transmission lock ups twice .. that is no fun because pulling the clutch and does not release the back wheel from being locked when the transmission locks. So I always Checked for radial movement in my rear wheel at every gas stop on that bmw.. my very first and my very last BMW. They sure ain’t what they used to be. but I find it remarkable that BMW would not call for an additive with friction modifiers to the final drives. On one of them, it was publicized in a magazine, the final drive on a GS the housing, actually exploded. There was a big chunk of it missing, and the gear lube inside was actually on fire in the photo… There were two riders that rode together in the famous iron, but rally here in the United States. They rode BMWs, and they carried a spare final drive complete unit. That shows how much confidence they had. I would suggest only draining the oil after at least an hour on the road so you have all of the metal particles, grit, gear, flake, in suspension in the oil. I would also drain the oil over a magnet that is inside of a sandwich bag, keeping the oil off of the magnet. there will be magnetic and non-magnetic material in the gear, lube your drain out of the final drive. You can inspect it, and depending on how much debris there is, you may be able to avoid a catastrophic failure before it happens.

    Greetings. I bought a mean streak 1600 with silver tail exhausts. It backfires but it's not annoying. I installed a K&N high flow filter in place of the original and now it backfires more and has become lazy. Inserting the ball as you say in the video, apart from backfiring less, will it be better? I think it pushed further down with the source filter

      They tell me that it is necessary to make a new map to get more gasoline in the mix. It is necessary?

      You can not add maps to the meanstreak ecu as it is an early simple ecu - fuel 'computers' are used to add more fuel, however there is no need to add fuel if all you have done is an after market exhaust and a slightly better flowing filter in the original housing. I am not sure what you mean by lazy? Blocking the air injection as described in the video will pretty much cure all the popping assuming you have no air leaks in your exhaust system.

      Thank you very much for your answer!!!!!! I'm glad to know that rescheduling is not necessary. By "Lazy" I mean it feels like you lost some output with the high flow filter

      It could be a number of things, in my experience these motors don't like being ridden at super low revs like a Harley and they get a little jurky. Your idle may be set a little low or you may just be "lugging" it a bit in a too high a gear. I'm not trying to insult your riding skills and abilities - it is just I have had a lot of people say that these motors don't ride at all like a harley motor and they get grumpy if the tick over is set low to make them lope like a HD.

    Had a 2021 BMW, with all the tec you could want, Got rid and bought a 955i speed triple, for the very reasons you just mentioned, Definitely more rewarding and engaging. Easy and straightforward to work on, no technical gizmos to go wrong, like you i would be nice to have abs, but i can live without it.

      I kinda wish I'd kept the Speed triple - but I still have a licence which probably wouldn't have been the case if it had stayed🤣 - thanks for the comment.

      Yes I agree - I sorted issues when they occurred over a long period of time and making a video wasn't always top of my priorities - I'm sure someone else has taken the trouble to film their sick vulcan so feel free to get your help elsewhere if you so wish. Oh and as I have said before - I'm an idiot and don't take anything I do as advice!
